The Fortunes of Captain Blood - Rafael Sabatini

For me, I think it was Rafael Sabatini's Captain Blood. He was a swashbuckling pirate and a gentleman. He wasn't named Captain Blood because of his red hair—his hair was black, if I recall correctly—but because he was a very prolific...pirate. Yes, a questionable virtue, to put it mildly. Anyhow, years later, as I wrote my first novel Into the Blind, my protagonist's boyfriend got blood-red hair and the name Fox. I made him a gentleman and a badass fighter. And yes, sometimes he makes ethically questionable choices. Long live Captain Blood! :)
